2023 Mushroom Festival Schedule


Friday, October 20, 2023 

6 pm, Mushroom Dinner at the Yachats Commons with live music by GAEA. 

The dinner will be created by Ona Restaurant and Heceta Head Bed and Breakfast.


7:30 pm, Key Note speaker Langdon Cook, author of The Mushroom Hunters: A Hidden World of Food, Money and (Mostly Legal) Adventures

Pay Dirt: The Wild West of Fungi

Join author Langdon Cook for a tour of his award-winning book The Mushroom Hunters. Cook embeds himself in the shadowy subculture of mushroom harvesting for profit, reporting from both rural woods and big city restaurants. Meet the pickers, buyers, and chefs in a "patch to plate" slideshow that reveals this free-wheeling frontier-style economy in action. Q&A and book signing to follow

Key features for the field identification of fleshy fungi (mushrooms).  We will review the habitats &  ecosystems, substrates, and the fungi’s relationships with the environment.  We will look at all the major groups of fleshy fungi and the key features used to help identify them.  We will review some of the most relevant books and other literature.

MUSHROOMS and HERBS play a vital role in our health and well-being; not only are mushrooms/herbs important nutritionally and medicinally, but they also link directly with intuition and higher intelligence.                                                                                               They have an inherent ability to channel life energy and to connect with those places within the US that are "disconnected" and in need of healing.

This oral and electronic presentation will cover 

some of the traditional and novel ways that fungi have become an integral part of human existence here on Earth. We will also learn how fungi have mastered every available ecological niche in earth and why they are the most generous teachers + a few ways to prepare and enjoy common wild-crafted and cultivated species for the table

CATCHING 'EM, KEEPING 'EM, AND COOKING 'EM

This workshop will focus on harvesting, preserving, and cooking wild mushrooms, focusing on edible mushrooms from the Oregon Coast.  A discussion of choice edibles and their characteristics, habitats, and flavor profiles will be included.  Following the presentation. Participants will enjoy a "small bites" sampling of five different mushroom dishes made with locally foraged mushrooms.

Dr. Charles Lefevre is the founder of New World Truffieres, Inc., a company pioneering the cultivation of truffles in North America, and co-founder of The Oregon Truffle Festival. Dr. Lefevre received his Ph.D. in Forest Mycology at Oregon State University in 2002, conducting research on the host associations of the American Matsutake mushroom. Learn how and why to make spore prints. Test your knowledge and learn about how to
identify Mushrooms using an assorted library of mushroom books. 

Art projects coloring books for younger age groups and books to
color for older groups. Take artwork home. Make your own name tag.
All supplies are provided.

2023 Yachats Mushroom Festival Guided Walk Schedule

Which walk is right for me?

Level A: An introduction to mushrooms (1 hr) - Common names and identification of local edible and toxic mushrooms for the newcomer.

Level B: Mushrooms for beginners ( 1 hr) - Beginning identification, taxonomy (scientific naming), and ecology of common coastal mushrooms.

Level C: Intermediate mushrooming (1 hr) - More identification, taxonomy, and ecology. Use of identification books.

Level D: Intermediate mushrooming (2 hr) - In-depth identification, taxonomy, and ecology for the serious mushroom hunter.

All festival walks are led by professional and amateur mycologists, forest ecologists, and naturalists. Walks are held on excellent, easy trails in the spectacular coastal mature and old-growth forest. NOTE: Outdoor clothing and sturdy walking shoes should be worn.


Please register for guided walks at the top of the page; there is a maximum of 12 people on each walk. Walks will either be at Cape Perpetua (CP) or Gerdemann Botanical Preserve (GBP)


All walks have a $5 registration fee
